and whoever commits major sins and persists in them without repenting, Allāh despises that from him just as He loves the good that he does, for His love for the servant is according to his faith and piety. And whoever thinks that sins do not harm him because Allāh loves him despite his persistence in them is like someone who claims that consuming poison does not harm him because of his continued use of it and his failure to seek a remedy due to his healthy constitution. If the fool were to reflect on what Allāh has narrated in His Book about the stories of His prophets and what befell them in terms of repentance and seeking forgiveness, and the various trials they endured which served as a purification for them according to their circumstances, he would understand some of the harm that sins cause their doers, even if they are the most elevated of people in status. For the lover of a creature, if he is not knowledgeable about what pleases the beloved and does not intend it, but rather acts according to the dictates of love even if it is in ignorance and injustice, that becomes a reason for the beloved to despise him and turn away from him, and even a reason for his punishment. Many of those who claim to love Allāh have engaged in various forms of ignorance about the religion: either by transgressing the limits set by Allāh, neglecting the rights of Allāh, or by making false claims that have no reality. Like the saying of some of them: "Any disciple of mine who leaves anyone in the Fire, I am innocent of him," and another said: "Any disciple of mine who allows any of the believers to enter the Fire, I am innocent of him." The first made his disciple take everyone out of the Fire, and the second made his disciple prevent the people of major sins from entering the Fire
