Chapter on What Has Been Reported That Allāh Has Withheld Repentance from the Innovator
This is narrated from the ḥadīth of Anas and from the mursal reports of al-Ḥasan. Ibn Waḍḍāḥ mentioned from Ayyūb who said: There was a man among us who held a certain opinion and then abandoned it. I went to Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn and said, "Did you know that so-and-so abandoned his opinion?" He said, "Look to what he turns to." The latter part of the ḥadīth is more severe on them than the first: "They will exit from Islam as an arrow exits from the prey, then they will not return to it." Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal was asked about the meaning of that and he said: He is not granted success in repentance.
