Mālik said: "The prayer was established, and the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) turned his face towards us and said:". And he mentioned it. Al-Bukhārī added in a narration: "before he said the takbīr" and also added at its end: "One of us would place his shoulder against the shoulder of his companion, and his foot against his foot." It is also with al-Mukhliṣ in the wording: Anas said: "I saw one of us placing his shoulder against the shoulder of his companion, and his foot against his foot." If you were to try to do this today, one of you would recoil as if he were a stubborn mule. Its chain is also authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs, and al-Ḥāfiẓ attributed it to Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr and al-Ismāʿīlī. Al-Bukhārī titled this ḥadīth with the words: "Chapter on placing shoulder to shoulder and foot to foot in the row." As for the ḥadīth of al-Nuʿmān, it is: "Straighten your rows three times, by Allāh, you will straighten your rows or He will cause discord among your hearts."
