"let him be." So I approached him until the neck of his mount and the neck of my mount were aligned, and I said: O Messenger of Allāh! Inform me of what will distance me from the punishment of Allāh and admit me into Paradise. He said: ... and he mentioned it. I said: This isnād has trustworthy men, except for (al-Zamīl); he is unknown. As for his saying: (from a man), I suspect it is an insertion; for the original manuscript is not good! This is supported by the fact that al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar mentioned it in the biography of (Abū al-Muntafiq) in "al-Iṣābah" from the narration of al-Ṭabarānī through the route of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAwn without his saying: (from a man). This distortion resembles what occurred in "Majmaʿ al-Zawāʾid" (1/43-44): "and from Ḥujayr from his father—who was known as (Abū al-Muntafiq)—said: I came to Mecca..." and he narrated the ḥadīth. And he said: "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr", and in its isnād is Ḥujayr—who is the son of the Companion—and I have not seen anyone mention him!" Thus he said! Then he mentioned a similar ḥadīth, saying: "and from Suwayd ibn Ḥujayr, he said: My uncle told me, he said: I met the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) between ʿArafah and Muzdalifah, and I took hold of the reins of his camel, and I said: O Messenger of Allāh! What will bring me closer to Paradise? And what will distance me from the Fire? He said: 'As for if you have asked concisely; you have indeed asked greatly and at length: Establish the prescribed prayer. Pay the obligatory zakāh. Perform Ḥajj to the House. And whatever you love for people to do to you; do it to them, and whatever you dislike for people to do to you; avoid it for them. Release the reins of the camel.'" And he said: "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr"; and in its isnād is Qazaʿah ibn Suwayd; Ibn Maʿīn and others considered him trustworthy, while al-Bukhārī and others weakened him." And there is another route for the ḥadīth from Abū al-Muntafiq—or it is said: Ibn al-Muntafiq—which is acceptable, from the narration of al-Mughīrah ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Yashkurī from his father, who said: I went to Kūfah to trade in mules, and he said: I came to the market, but it had not yet started. He said; I said to a companion of mine: If only we entered the mosque—and its location at that time was among the date sellers—; and there was a man from Qays—called Ibn al-Muntafiq—, and he was saying: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was described to me, and he was adorned for me. So I sought him at Minā, and it was said to me: He is at ʿArafāt. I reached him and pressed towards him, and it was said to me: Keep away from the path of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)! He said: "Leave the man, what does he want?" He said: I pressed towards him until I reached him. He said: I took hold of the reins of the Messenger of Allāh's (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) mount—or he said: its halter; thus Muḥammad narrated—until the necks of our mounts were aligned. He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) did not prevent me—or he said: did not change towards me; thus Muḥammad narrated—, he said: I asked you about two things:
