- (He said: "Say: 'Glory be to Allāh, and praise be to Allāh, and there is no deity but Allāh, and Allāh is the Greatest.'" The Bedouin counted on his hand, pondered, then returned. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) smiled and said: "The poor man has thought." He came and said: "O Messenger of Allāh! 'Glory be to Allāh, and praise be to Allāh, and there is no deity but Allāh, and Allāh is the Greatest'; this is for Allāh, so what is for me?" The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to him: "O Bedouin! When you say: 'Glory be to Allāh,' Allāh says: 'You have spoken the truth.' When you say: 'Praise be to Allāh,' Allāh says: 'You have spoken the truth.' When you say: 'There is no deity but Allāh,' Allāh says: 'You have spoken the truth.' When you say: 'Allāh is the Greatest,' Allāh says: 'You have spoken the truth.' And when you say: 'O Allāh! Forgive me,' Allāh says: 'I have done so.' When you say: 'O Allāh! Have mercy on me,' Allāh says: '[I have] done so.' When you say: 'O Allāh! Provide for me,' Allāh says: 'I have done so.'" The Bedouin counted seven on his hand, then departed.) It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "Shuʿab al-Īmān" (1/431-432/619) through the route of al-Ḥasan ibn Thawāb Abū ʿAlī: "ʿAmmār ibn ʿUthmān al-Ḥalabī Abū ʿUthmān narrated to me—Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal considered him trustworthy and regretted not having written anything from him—Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān al-Ḍabʿī narrated to me from Thābit from Anas who said: A Bedouin came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: 'O Messenger of Allāh! Teach me something good.' The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) took his hand and said: ... and mentioned it." I said: This is a good isnād, its men are trustworthy, except for those below al-Ḥasan ibn Thawāb; they are trustworthy, well-known preservers, and therefore I did not mention them. As for al-Ḥasan ibn Thawāb, my research about him exhausted me until I found him, so I prostrated to Allāh
