- "The five daily prayers, from one Friday to the next, and from Ramadan to Ramadan, are expiations for what is between them, as long as major sins are avoided." It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/400): Hārūn narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us, saying: Abū Ṣakhr Ḥumayd ibn Ziyād narrated to me: ʿUmar ibn Isḥāq, the client of Zāʾidah, narrated to him from his father from Abū Hurayrah: that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to say it, and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is according to the conditions of Muslim, except for the anonymity of ʿUmar ibn Isḥāq, as will be mentioned. Hārūn is Ibn Maʿrūf, and he is a contemporary of Imām Aḥmad as in "Siyar al-Dhahabī" (11/181), and he was followed by another Hārūn and others. Muslim said in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (1/144): Abū al-Ṭāhir and Hārūn ibn Saʿīd al-Aylī narrated to me, they said: Ibn Wahb informed us of it. It was also recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "al-Shuʿab" (3/308/3619), and al-Mizzī in "Tahdhīb al-Kamāl" (12/273-274) with his isnād from Hārūn ibn Saʿīd ibn al-Haytham. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (3/2/140-141) through another route from Ibn Wahb. I say: ʿUmar ibn Isḥāq was not deemed reliable except by Ibn Ḥibbān and al-ʿAjlī. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said: "Acceptable." He was followed up as will be mentioned, and I see—Allāh knows best—that it should not be stated in his biography that Muslim recorded for him except with clarification that he recorded for him as a follow-up; for it is mentioned in "al-Tahdhīb" that Muslim did not narrate for him except this one ḥadīth, and he only recorded it following the route he traced from the narration
