listened or reasoned, we would not be among the companions of the Blaze). We ask Allāh for a good end and to die on the path of the believers. I find it beneficial to convey to the esteemed readers the words of two eminent scholars of Islam and preservers of ḥadīth, which explain the wisdom behind the Prophet's (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) narration of this ḥadīth. Ibn Ḥibbān said after the ḥadīth: "Indeed, Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, sent the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) as a teacher for His creation, placing him in the position of clarifying His intent. He (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) conveyed His message and explained His signs with both concise and detailed expressions, understood by his Companions or some of them. This report is among those whose meaning is grasped by those not deprived of success in attaining the truth. This is because Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, sent the Angel of Death to Mūsá with a message of trial and test, commanding him to say: 'Respond to your Lord.' It was a command of trial and test, not a command that Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, intended to enforce; just as He commanded His close friend (peace be upon our Prophet and upon him) to sacrifice his son as a command of trial and test, not a command that Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, intended to enforce. When he resolved to sacrifice his son (and laid him on his forehead), He ransomed him with a great sacrifice. Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, has sent angels to His messengers in forms they did not recognize; like the angels' entrance to His messenger Ibrāhīm, whom he did not recognize until he felt fear from them, and like Jibrīl's coming to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and questioning him about faith and Islam, whom the chosen one did not recognize until he departed. Thus, the coming of the Angel of Death to Mūsá was not in the form Mūsá was familiar with, and Mūsá was protective. He saw in his house a man he did not recognize, so he raised his hand and struck him, and his strike hit the eye in the form he had assumed, not the form..
