- (The Angel of Death came to (in another narration: the Angel of Death used to come to people visibly, until he came to) Mūsá (ʿalayhi al-salām), and said to him: "Respond to your Lord." Mūsá (ʿalayhi al-salām) then struck the eye of the Angel of Death and blinded it. The angel returned to Allāh, saying: [O Lord!] "You sent me to a servant who does not want to die, and he has blinded my eye. [If not for his honor with You, I would have been harsh on him]." Allāh restored his eye and said: "Return to My servant and say: 'Do you wish for life? If you wish for life, place your hand on the back of an ox, and for every hair your hand covers, you will live a year.' Mūsá said: [O Lord!] 'Then what?' Allāh said: 'Then you will die.' Mūsá said: 'Now, then, O Lord, let me die near the sacred land, a stone's throw away!' [He said: So he smelled him a scent and took his soul, and after that, he came to people secretly]. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "By Allāh! If I were there, I would have shown you his grave by the side of the road at (in another narration: under) the red dune." I said: This ḥadīth is among the well-known authentic ḥadīths that were recorded by the two Shaykhs from various chains from Abū Hurayrah (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), and the ummah has accepted it. I have compiled its wordings and the additions found in it, and presented it to you in a single narrative as you see, so that you may grasp the complete story with all its scattered benefits in the depths of its sources, which aids you in understanding it correctly, without confusion or doubt, thus submitting to the words of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) in full submission
