"Muḥammad ibn Abī ibn Kaʿb al-Anṣārī, Abū Muʿādh al-Madanī, and it is said: Muḥammad ibn so-and-so ibn Abī..." They indicated with their statement "so-and-so" to (ʿAmr), and that mentioning him between (Muḥammad) and (Abī ibn Kaʿb) is not correct. Their main evidence for this—Allāh knows best—is the statement of Abū Ḥātim in the biography of (Muḥammad ibn Abī) from "al-Jarḥ" (3/2/208): "He narrated from his father, and was narrated from by Busr ibn Saʿīd, al-Ḥaḍramī ibn Lāḥiq, and his son Muʿādh ibn Muḥammad. Al-Bukhārī considered them two names, but I heard my father say: they are one. Al-Awzāʿī narrated from Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr from him. Ḥarb ibn Shaddād narrated from Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr from al-Ḥaḍramī ibn Lāḥiq from him." What draws attention is the difference in the biography between "Tahdhīb al-Mizzī" and "Tahdhīb al-ʿAsqalānī"; the former said: "He narrated from his grandfather!" Then he mentions from al-Wāqidī that Muḥammad ibn Abī ibn Kaʿb was among those killed on the day of al-Ḥarrah in the year sixty-three! Perhaps his statement "from his grandfather" was a slip of the pen. Furthermore, Abū Ḥātim, who criticized al-Bukhārī for making the name into two names and asserted that they are one as mentioned earlier, nonetheless provided a separate biography for Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr ibn Abī ibn Kaʿb al-Anṣārī, saying: "He narrated from Umm al-Ṭufayl, the wife of Abī ibn Kaʿb, and was narrated from by Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Saʿd ibn Zurārah." Al-Bukhārī preceded him in this (1/1/192), and Ibn Ḥibbān followed them, mentioning him in "al-Thiqāt" with this narration
