I say: rather, he is a trustworthy and virtuous person, as is evident from his biography in "Tārīkh Baghdād" (13/244-245), and from Ibn Ḥibbān's authentication of him, and the numerous trustworthy narrators who reported from him, among whom are some of the ḥuffāẓ and jurists; refer to "Tahdhīb al-Mizzī" and "Taysīr al-Intifāʿ." As for what Ashʿath ibn Sawwār narrated from ʿIkrimah from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: Ḍumrah ibn Jundub left his home as an emigrant, and he said to his family: Carry me and take me out of the land of the polytheists to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), but he died on the way before reaching the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), then the revelation descended: "And whoever leaves his home as an emigrant..." the verse. It was also narrated by Ibn Abī Ḥātim, Abū Yaʿlá in his "Musnad" (5/81/2679), and Abū Nuʿaym also in "al-Maʿrifah" (1/331/2), and al-Wāḥidī in "Asbāb al-Nuzūl" (pp. 131-132). Al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (7/10): "It was narrated by Abū Yaʿlá, and its men are trustworthy!" He stated it thus! There is a consideration in this; for Ashʿath ibn Sawwār is disputed over, and Muslim included him as a corroborative narrator, and there is no doubt about his truthfulness and poor memory, and thus we reconcile between al-Dhahabī's statement about him in "al-Kāshif": "truthful." And al-Ḥāfiẓ's statement in "al-Taqrīb": "weak." However, it might be strengthened by the narration of Sharīk from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār from ʿIkrimah with it.
