there was confusion in it. Consequently, what comes from his narration from the experts like Yaḥyá ibn Maʿīn, al-Bukhārī, Abū Zurʿah, and Abū Ḥātim is from his authentic ḥadīth, and what comes from the narration of the shaykhs about him should be scrutinized; and Allāh knows best. Abū Shurayḥ: His name is ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Shurayḥ al-Iskandarānī, a reliable narrator cited in the "Ṣaḥīḥayn." He was contradicted in both isnād and matn by Saʿīd ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-ʿAmiyāʾ, who said: from Sahl ibn Abī Umāmah that he narrated from Anas ibn Mālik that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) used to say... and he mentioned a similar ḥadīth, adding: "(And monasticism which they invented, We did not prescribe it for them), then they went out the next day and said: We ride to observe and reflect..." the ḥadīth in full. I included it in the other book (3468) because of this addition, and Saʿīd is unique in it; only Ibn Ḥibbān authenticated him. The ḥadīth was cited by al-Haythamī in "al-Majmaʿ," and he said (1/62): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ' and 'al-Kabīr,' and in it is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ṣāliḥ, the scribe of al-Layth, whom some authenticated and others weakened." I said: It has two mursal supporting narrations: one from Abū Qilābah, raised with the wording: "Those before you perished due to severity; they imposed severity on themselves, so Allāh imposed severity on them. Those are their remnants in the dwellings and hermitages." It was recorded by Ibn Jarīr in "al-Tafsīr" (7/7), and al-Marwazī in "Zawāʾid al-Zuhd" (365/1031) and others through two chains from Ayyūb from him
