- "Come, pledge allegiance to me that you will not associate anything with Allāh, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill your children, nor bring forth a falsehood that you invent between your hands and feet, and do not disobey me in what is right. Whoever among you fulfills this, his reward is with Allāh. Whoever commits any of these and is punished in this world, it is an expiation for him. Whoever commits any of these and Allāh conceals it, his matter is with Allāh; if He wills, He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him." This is from the ḥadīth of ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu), and there are three paths from him: The first, which is the most famous, is from Abū Idrīs ʿĀʾidh Allāh ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Khūlānī, who reported that ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit—one of those who witnessed Badr with the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and one of his Companions on the night of al-ʿAqabah—informed him that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said, while a group of his Companions were around him: (He mentioned the ḥadīth) He said: So I pledged allegiance to him on that. It was recorded by al-Bukhārī (1/54-58, 7/176, 8/518, 12/69-70, 13/173) and the context is his in a narration, and Muslim (5/127), and al-Tirmidhī (1439), and al-Nasāʾī (2/182-183), and al-Dārimī (2/220), and Aḥmad (5/314, 340). He added in a narration after saying: "nor kill your children": "He recited the verse that was taken upon the women: *When the believing women come to you*." This is a narration for Muslim. The second path: from al-Ṣanābīḥī from ʿUbādah with it in a summarized form, and he added: "and do not plunder."
