it is the narration of Ibn Ḥibbān through the route of Ibn Faḍīl from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Musayyib from him. This is a mursal [ḥadīth] as you can see, for Ibn al-Jazzār is a Tābiʿī who omitted the intermediary narrator between him and Ibn Masʿūd, which the previous narrations agreed to establish despite their differences. I had feared in "al-Ṣaḥīḥah" that the intermediary might have been omitted by the copyist, so I questioned there saying: "I said: and his mention was omitted from the book of Ibn Ḥibbān, so I do not know whether this is the narration with him or if it was omitted by the copyist?" Now it has become clear to me that there was no omission by the copyist, and that the narration occurred in this manner for Ibn Ḥibbān, for it is likewise in "al-Iḥsān," especially since Ibn Faḍīl was followed by al-Naḍr ibn Muḥammad from al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Musayyib with it. It was extracted by al-Ṭabarānī (10 / 262 / 10503). In summary: the narrators differed regarding Yaḥyá ibn al-Jazzār in three ways: first: from him from the son of Zaynab's brother. Second: from him from the son of Zaynab's sister. Third: from him mursal without mentioning the son. The majority establish him as you have seen, so he is the defect in the isnād, because he is unknown as al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (4 / 158) and "Mukhtaṣar al-Sunan" (5 / 363). Among the oddities is the statement of al-Ḥāfiẓ in "al-Taqrīb": "It is as if he is a Companion, and I have not seen him named!" Thus he said, and I had previously quoted him in "al-Ṣaḥīḥah," without being granted any insight into it, and now I say:
