- "Indeed, incantations, amulets, and love spells are shirk." It was narrated by al-Ḥākim, who said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Zāhid al-Aṣbahānī narrated to us, Aḥmad ibn Mihrān narrated to us, ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsá narrated to us, Isrāʾīl narrated from Maysarah ibn Ḥabīb from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr from Qays ibn al-Sakan al-Asadī, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd (raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu) entered upon his wife and saw on her a charm made of red thread, so he tore it off violently, and then said: "The family of ʿAbd Allāh are free from shirk." And he said: "Among what we preserved from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) is: [he mentioned the ḥadīth]." And he said: "The isnād is authentic." Al-Dhahabī agreed with him. I say: It is as they said, if Allāh wills, for its narrators up to ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Mūsá are narrators of the authentic [collections], except for Maysarah ibn Ḥabīb, who is trustworthy. There is a disagreement in its isnād and text from someone whose disagreement does not harm, as will be explained, if Allāh wills. As for Aḥmad ibn Mihrān, he is Abū Jaʿfar al-Yazdī, deemed trustworthy by Ibn Ḥibbān, and a group narrated from him, other than this Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Zāhid. He has a biography in "Ansāb al-Samʿānī" and "al-Lisān." As for Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Zāhid, he has a good biography in "Siyar Aʿlām al-Nubalāʾ" and was described as "the shaykh, the imām, the exemplary muḥaddith..." It was mentioned about al-Ḥākim that he said about him: "He is the muḥaddith of his time, his supplication was answered."
