it was recorded by al-Dāraqutnī. Ḥayyawah is reliable, but the narrator from him, Wahb Allāh Abū Zurʿah al-Ḥajrī, is criticized. ʿAṭāʾ is the son of Abū Rabāḥ, and it was narrated from him by Qays ibn Saʿd from Abū Hurayrah in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "Indeed, the dowry of a prostitute, the price of a dog and a cat, and the earnings of a cupper are from illicit gains." It was recorded by Ibn Ḥibbān through the route of Ḥammād ibn Salamah from Qays ibn Salamah with it. This is a good isnād; its men are all reliable, the men of Muslim, except for Ibn Ḥibbān's shaykh, of course. It is a strong corroboration for the ḥadīth of Ibn Lahīʿah that he preserved it. Then I found a fourth route for it, narrated by Abū Awīs: Sharḥabīl informed me from Jābir in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "He forbade the price of a dog and said: 'It is a pre-Islamic provision.'" It was recorded by Aḥmad. Al-Haythamī said: "Its men are reliable." I say: Sharḥabīl - who is Ibn Saʿd - had become confused. It has two corroborations from the ḥadīth of Maymūnah bint Saʿd and ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit. As for the ḥadīth of Maymūnah, it is narrated by Āminah bint ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz from her that she said: O Messenger of Allāh! Advise us about the dog?
