- "There is nothing in omens, the evil eye is true, and the best of augury is optimism." It was recorded by al-Bukhārī in "al-Adab al-Mufrad" (914) and "al-Tārīkh" (2/1/107-108), al-Tirmidhī (2/6), Aḥmad (4/67 and 5/70 and 379), Ibn Saʿd (7/66), and Abū Yaʿlá in "Musnad" (582) and in "al-Mufārīd" (2/13/2), and al-Ṭabarānī (1/175/2) through various chains from Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr: narrated to me by Ḥiyyah ibn Ḥābis al-Tamīmī: narrated to me by my father in a marfūʿ form. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A strange ḥadīth." Shaybān narrated from Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr from Ḥiyyah ibn Ḥābis from his father from Abū Hurayrah from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). ʿAlī ibn al-Mubārak and Ḥarb ibn Shadād do not mention in it: from Abū Hurayrah." I said: Al-Tirmidhī found it strange because Ḥiyyah ibn Ḥābis is not well-known for his reliability, and no one narrated from him except Yaḥyá ibn Abī Kathīr, as mentioned in "al-Mīzān." In "al-Taqrīb": "Accepted." Meaning when corroborated, otherwise his ḥadīth is weak. Then he said: "And it is a mistake to claim that he was a Companion." However, the majority of the ḥadīth has a witness, narrated by Abū Maʿshar from Muḥammad ibn Qays from Abū Hurayrah in a marfūʿ form with the wording: "The best of augury is optimism, and the evil eye is true."
