- "If you testify that there is no deity but Allāh, establish prayer, give zakāh, separate yourselves from the polytheists, and give from the spoils of war the fifth and the Prophet's share (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and the chosen portion—perhaps he said: and his chosen portion—then you are secure by the security of Allāh and the security of His Messenger." It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī (6/303 and 9/13), Aḥmad (5/78), and al-Khaṭṭābī in "Gharīb al-Ḥadīth" (4/236) through the route of Murrah ibn Khālid: Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Khayr narrated to us, saying: While we were at the market, a Bedouin with disheveled hair came to us, carrying a piece of leather or a piece of a bag. We said: It seems this person is not from the people of the town. He said: Indeed, this is a letter written for me by the Messenger of Allāh (peace be upon him). The people said: Show it to us. So I took it and read it, and it said: In the name of Allāh, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate: This is a letter from Muḥammad, the Prophet, the Messenger of Allāh, to the Banū Zuhayr ibn Uqaysh—Abū al-ʿAlāʾ said: They are a clan from ʿAkl—: If you testify... [and so on with the ḥadīth]. The wording is from al-Bayhaqī. And this isnād is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, and the anonymity of the Companion does not harm as established. It was also narrated by Aḥmad (5/77) through the route of ʿAbd al-Razzāq (4/300/7877) from al-Jarīrī from Abū al-ʿAlāʾ ibn al-Shukhayr with a similar account. (The chosen portion): What the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) would select and choose from the general spoils, such as a horse, a slave, a sword, or anything he desired, and this was from the main spoils before the fifth was taken. He (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was specifically granted these three (meaning those mentioned in the ḥadīth: the fifth, the share, and the chosen portion) as a substitute and compensation for the charity that was forbidden to him. This was stated by al-Khaṭṭābī
