or present the ḥadīth of the chapter as prohibitive, and the prohibitive takes precedence over the permissive. And Allāh knows best.

"If it was a make-up fast from Ramaḍān, then make up a day in its place, and if it was voluntary, then if you wish, make it up, and if you wish, do not make it up." It was narrated with this wording by Aḥmad (6/343-344), al-Dārimī (2/16), al-Ṭaḥāwī in "Sharḥ al-Maʿānī" (1/353 - Hindiyyah), al-Ṭayālisī also (no. 1616), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (24/407/990) through the route of Ḥammād ibn Salamah: narrated to us by Simāk ibn Ḥarb from Hārūn, the son of the daughter of Umm Hānī or the son of the son of Umm Hānī, from Umm Hānī: that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) drank a beverage and handed it to her to drink, so she said: I am fasting but I disliked to refuse your leftover. He said: so he mentioned it. I said: And this isnād is weak, this Hārūn is unknown as al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb", and al-Dhahabī said in "al-Mīzān": "He is not known and he is not in (Thiqāt Ibn Ḥibbān)." And they have differed in its isnād from Simāk in various ways that I have mentioned and analyzed in "Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd" (2120) and I have concluded therein to improve or authenticate the ḥadīth due to its routes, and al-ʿIrāqī has improved one of its isnāds. I have only presented this wording here to consider what al-Shawkānī mentioned regarding its fiqh, as he mentioned in "al-Sayl al-Jarrār" (2/151) from the author of "Ḥadāʾiq al-Azhār" that he said regarding someone making up what is due upon him from fasting and then breaks it: that he sins, and al-Shawkānī responded to him with this ḥadīth, saying:
