in an izār and ridāʾ, letting them hang low. The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) began to take hold of the edge of his garment, humbling himself before Allāh, and saying: "O Allāh, Your servant, the son of Your servant, the son of Your maidservant." Until ʿAmr ibn Zurārah heard it... the ḥadīth is similar, with the addition: "O ʿAmr ibn Zurārah, indeed Allāh does not love those who let their garments hang low." Al-Haythamī said: "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī with multiple isnāds, and the men of one of them are trustworthy." There is supporting evidence for the addition in "Shuʿab al-Īmān" (2/222/2) and another will appear at the beginning of the ninth volume under number (4004). There is a third supporting narration by ʿAmr ibn al-Sharīd, who reports from his father: "The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) followed a man from Thaqīf until he hurried after him, until he took hold of his garment and said: 'Raise your izār.'" The man uncovered his knees and said: "O Messenger of Allāh! I am bowlegged, and my knees knock together." The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "All of Allāh's creation is good." He said: "That man was not seen except with his izār at the middle of his shins until he died." I said: Its isnād is authentic according to the criteria of al-Bukhārī and Muslim, and it has been mentioned under number (1441). Part of it is supported by a ḥadīth from Ḥudhayfah who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "The place of the izār is to the middle of the shins and the muscle; if you refuse, then lower, and if you refuse, then behind the shins, and there is no right for the ankles in the izār." It was recorded by al-Nasāʾī (2/299) through the route of al-Aʿmash, and the context is his, and by al-Tirmidhī
