and the ḥadīth has supporting evidence from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, authenticated by Ibn Ḥibbān, al-Ḥākim, and others. It is included in "al-Mishkāt" (2881) and "al-Irwāʾ" (1334) among others.
وللحديث شاهد يتقوى به من حديث أبي هريرة، صححه ابن حبان والحاكم وغيرهما، وهو مخرج في " المشكاة " (٢٨٨١) و "الإرواء " (١٣٣٤) وغيرهما.

"Yes, and you should use water." It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Awsaṭ" (1/95/1): Mūsá ibn Hārūn narrated to us, Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī narrated to us, Marwān ibn Muʿāwiyah narrated to us from Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl from Anas: that Saʿd came to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and said: O Messenger of Allāh! My mother has passed away and did not leave a will. Will it benefit her if I give charity on her behalf? He said, and mentioned it. And he said: "Mūsá said: Marwān made a mistake in it in Mecca, and it is actually: 'from Ḥumayd from al-Ḥasan,' meaning it is mursal." I say: This Marwān is unanimously considered trustworthy. In fact, Imām Aḥmad was amazed by his precision and memory, saying: "How precise he was!" and he was relied upon by the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhārī and Muslim], so someone like him would not err based on mere claims. Therefore, this criticism was not considered by the two ḥadīth scholars al-Mundhirī in "al-Targhīb" (2/53) and al-Haythamī in "al-Majmaʿ" (3/138), who said: "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in 'al-Awsaṭ' and its narrators are relied upon in (the Ṣaḥīḥ)." I say: If we were to allow attributing error based on suspicion, then attributing the error to al-ʿAdanī would be more appropriate. He is Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyá ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī, and some have spoken about him. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful, authored the Musnad, but Abū Ḥātim said: He had some negligence."
" نعم وعليك بالماء ". أخرجه الطبراني في " الأوسط " (١ / ٩٥ / ١) : حدثنا موسى بن هارون حدثنا محمد ابن أبي عمر العدني حدثنا مروان بن معاوية عن حميد الطويل عن أنس: أن سعدا أتى النبي ﷺ فقال: يا رسول الله! إن أمي توفيت ولم توص أفينفعها أن أتصدق عنها؟ قال، فذكره. وقال: " قال موسى: وهم فيه مروان بمكة، وإنما هو: " عن حميد عن الحسن " يعني مرسلا ". قلت: مروان هذا ثقة اتفاقا، بل تعجب الإمام أحمد من إتقانه وحفظه فقال: " ما كان أحفظه! "، واحتج به الشيخان، فمثله لا يوهم بمجرد الدعوى. ولذلك لم يلتفت إلى هذا الإعلال الحافظان المنذري في " الترغيب " (٢ / ٥٣) والهيثمي في " المجمع " (٣ / ١٣٨) ، فقالا: " رواه الطبراني في " الأوسط " ورواته محتج بهم في (الصحيح) ". وأقول: لو جاز لنا التوهيم بالظن لكان نسبة الوهم إلى العدني أولى، وهو محمد بن يحيى بن أبي عمر العدني، فقد تكلم فيه بعضهم، وقال الحافظ في " التقريب ": " صدوق، صنف المسند، لكن قال أبو حاتم: كانت فيه غفلة ".
