- "Learn the book of the Jews, for I do not trust them with our book." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd (3645), al-Tirmidhī (2/119), al-Ḥākim (1/75) who authenticated it, Aḥmad (5/186), and al-Fākihī in "Ḥadīth" (1/14/2) with this wording, all from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī al-Zinād from his father from Khārijah ibn Zayd from his father who said: "When the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) arrived in Medina, I was brought to him, and I read to him. He said to me..." and he mentioned it. He said: "Not fifteen days passed before I learned it, and I would write for the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and read their books to him." Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good authentic ḥadīth." I say: Its chain is good, and al-Tirmidhī authenticated it because it has another route. Al-Tirmidhī also said after that: "It has been narrated from another path from Zayd ibn Thābit, narrated by al-Aʿmash from Thābit ibn ʿUbayd al-Anṣārī from Zayd ibn Thābit who said: (The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) commanded me to learn Syriac)." I say: Aḥmad (5/182) and al-Ḥākim (3/422) connected it from Jarīr from al-Aʿmash with the wording: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to me: "Do you know Syriac?" I said: "No." He said: "Then learn it, for writings come to us." So I learned it in seventeen days. Al-Ḥākim added: "Al-Aʿmash said: Writings would come to him that he did not wish anyone to see except those he trusted." And he said:
