- "O Muʿādh! It is possible that you will not meet me after this year of mine, or perhaps you will pass by my mosque and my grave." It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/235): Ḥakam ibn Nāfiʿ Abū al-Yamān narrated to us, Ṣafwān ibn ʿAmr narrated from Rāshid ibn Saʿd from ʿĀṣim ibn Ḥumayd al-Sakūnī, that when the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) sent Muʿādh to Yemen, the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) went out with him advising him, and Muʿādh was riding while the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was walking under his mount. When he finished, he mentioned it. And he added: Muʿādh ibn Jabal wept profusely at the separation from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), so the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "Do not weep, O Muʿādh! For weeping, or indeed weeping, is from Shayṭān." Al-Ṭabarānī also narrated it in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (20/121): Abū Zurʿah ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, Abū al-Yamān narrated it. Aḥmad said: Abū al-Mughīrah narrated to us: Ṣafwān narrated it without his saying: "He said: Do not weep..." etc. Both additions are his, and he added at the end: Then he turned and faced towards Madīnah and said: "The most deserving of people to me are the pious, wherever they are, and wherever they may be." I say: This isnād is authentic, all its men are trustworthy, and Abū al-Mughīrah's name is ʿAbd al-Quddūs ibn al-Ḥajjāj. Imām Aḥmad disagreed with him, al-Bazzār in "Musnad" said (1/380 - al-Kashf): al-ʿAbbās ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us, ʿAbd al-Quddūs ibn al-Ḥajjāj narrated it like the narration of Abū al-Yamān, except that he omitted al-Sakūnī from the isnād, saying: from Rāshid ibn Saʿd from Muʿādh ibn Jabal... Al-Ḥāfiẓ commented in "Zawāʾid al-Bazzār" (p. 87): "I say: there is a disconnection in it."
