and the addition is his, and he added: "Whenever he narrated this ḥadīth, he would narrate this other ḥadīth: There was a king among the kings, and that king had a soothsayer..." the ḥadīth in its entirety. It was recorded by al-Tirmidhī (2/236-237) and also by Muslim (8/229-231) and Aḥmad in one of his narrations (1/16-18) through the route of Ḥammād ibn Salamah who narrated it from Thābit without the first ḥadīth. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth." I said: And its isnād is also according to their conditions. (Note): In "al-Adhkār" by Imām al-Nawawī, it is stated: "Imām Abū Muḥammad al-Qāḍī Ḥusayn, one of our companions, may Allāh have mercy on him, mentioned in his book 'al-Taʿlīq fī al-Madhhab' that: 'One of the prophets, peace and blessings be upon them all, looked at his people one day and found them numerous and was pleased with them, then seventy thousand of them died in an hour. Allāh revealed to him: You have burdened them! If you had protected them when you burdened them, they would not have perished. He asked: With what should I protect them? Allāh, the Exalted, revealed to him: Say: I protect them with the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, who never dies, and I ward off from you evil with no power and no strength except by Allāh, the Most High, the Great.'" I say: In this context, it is objectionable to me because it contradicts the authentic preceding narration in ways that are not hidden, and it is surprising that al-Nawawī said afterwards: "The commentator on al-Qāḍī Ḥusayn said: It was the habit of al-Qāḍī, may Allāh have mercy on him, that when he looked at his companions and was pleased with their demeanor and good state, he would protect them with this mentioned [supplication]." I said: Al-Nawawī remained silent on it, as if he acknowledged and approved it, even if this were a weak ḥadīth
