I said: This isnād is weak. 2 - As for the ḥadīth of Jābir, it is narrated by Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd from Jābir in a marfūʿ manner. It was recorded by al-Ḥākim (1/161), who said: "Authentic according to the criteria of al-Shaykhayn," and al-Dhahabī agreed with him. And I say: It is only authentic because Hārūn ibn Isḥāq al-Hamdānī, one of its narrators, is not among the men of al-Shaykhayn, and it was recorded from his route by Ibn Khuzaymah in his "Ṣaḥīḥ" (117) who said: "It indicates that the specified amount of water for ablution suffices, not that it is impermissible to decrease or increase it." I said: It is as he said, but one should avoid extravagance in the use of water for ablution and bathing, as it is prohibited. 3 - As for the ḥadīth of Anas, it is narrated by Sharīk from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿĪsá from Ibn Jabr ibn ʿAtīk with the wording: "Two pounds of water suffice for ablution." It was recorded by Aḥmad (3/179) and al-Tirmidhī (2/507/609 - Shākir) who said: "A strange ḥadīth, we do not know it except from the narration of Sharīk with this wording." I said: Sharīk - who is Ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Qāḍī - has poor memory, but he was not alone in this narration, as Sufyān followed him from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Jabr with it.
