thus, Abū Khālid al-Dalānī, according to the knowledge of the ḥāfiẓ al-ʿAsqalānī—and he is a sufficient authority in this field—is among the senior followers of the tābiʿīn, so there is nothing preventing the possibility of his hearing from the second generation, which refers to the senior tābiʿīn. And Allāh knows best. It is noteworthy that this negation reported by Abū Yaʿlá from Muḥammad ibn Bashshār from Ibn Mahdī is contradicted by what al-Bukhārī narrated from him, which I relied upon to establish that he is al-Dalānī. For he said in the biography of Yazīd Abū Khālid al-Wāsiṭī from Ibrāhīm al-Saksakī: Muḥammad ibn Bashshār said to me: Ibn Mahdī and Ghundar informed us from Shuʿbah from Yazīd ibn Abī Khālid al-Dalānī from Abū ʿUbaydah... The Yemeni investigator commented on it by saying: "This is how it appears in both originals, and it seems to be one of Ibn Bashshār's errors, adding the word: 'ibn,' and adding: 'al-Dalānī.' And Allāh knows best." His basis for this error was the earlier statement of Ibn Abī Ḥātim: "And he is not al-Dalānī." Al-Yamānī transmitted it from him just before his mentioned commentary. In summary, this is a problematic issue that requires further research and investigation, for correcting Imām al-Bukhārī or one of his trustworthy narrators is not an easy matter. May Allāh facilitate for me or for others who are concerned with this noble science what reveals the truth and resolves the issue, but this does not prevent the improvement of the ḥadīth.
