2 - As for the ḥadīth of Tamīm, it is narrated by ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, and there is a difference of opinion about it in several aspects: The first: Abū Badr said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to us, saying: Someone whom I do not suspect informed me from Tamīm al-Dārī, who said: "I asked the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) about a man from the people of disbelief who converts to Islam at the hands of a Muslim man, what is the sunnah regarding him? He said: Who is more entitled to his life and death?" It was recorded by Abū ʿAmr ibn al-Sammāk in "Ḥadīth" (2/25/1) and from him by al-Bayhaqī (10/296). I say: This isnād is good; its narrators are trustworthy except for the man who was not named. Even though he is considered trustworthy and not suspected by the one narrating from him, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar, such a verification is not accepted by the majority as long as the trustworthy narrator is not named. However, he has been named in some of the following narrations, showing that he is trustworthy, thus confirming the ḥadīth, and all praise is due to Allāh. The second: Yaḥyá ibn Ḥamzah said: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated to me, saying: I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muhib narrating to ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz from Qabīṣah ibn Dhūʾayb from Tamīm with it. It was recorded by Abū Dāwūd (2/20), al-Ḥākim (2/219), al-Bayhaqī (10/296, 297), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr" (1273) through various chains from Yaḥyá with it. I say: This isnād is good; all its narrators are trustworthy, the men of the two Shaykhs, except for ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muhib—some say ibn Wahb, but the correct is the first—and he is trustworthy as mentioned in "al-Taqrīb." However, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, despite being among their narrators, some have criticized him regarding his memory. Al-Dhahabī said in "al-Mughnī": "A group declared him trustworthy, but Abū Musher weakened him."
