"By the One in whose hand is my soul, Allāh does not bestow His mercy except on the merciful." They said, "All of us are merciful." He said, "It is not the mercy of one of you to his companion, but mercy to all people." This was narrated by al-Ḥāfiẓ al-ʿIrāqī in "Majlis 86 of al-Amālī" (77/2) through the chain of Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb from Sinān ibn Saʿd from Anas ibn Mālik as a marfūʿ ḥadīth. He said, "This is a ḥasan gharīb ḥadīth, and Sinān ibn Saʿd was said to be Saʿd ibn Sinān and also Saʿīd ibn Sinān. He was deemed trustworthy by Ibn Maʿīn and Ibn Ḥibbān, who said: 'The Egyptians narrated from him, and they differed about him, and I hope the correct name is Sinān ibn Saʿd.'" He said, "I have examined his ḥadīth and found that what is narrated from Sinān ibn Saʿd resembles the ḥadīths of the trustworthy narrators, while what is narrated from Saʿd ibn Sinān and Saʿīd ibn Sinān contains anomalies, as if they were two different people. No one wrote his ḥadīth due to their confusion about his name." Al-Nasāʾī said he is weak in ḥadīth. I said: Sinān was not alone in narrating this; he was followed by Akhshan al-Sadūsī from Anas. We narrated it in "Kitāb al-Adab" by al-Bayhaqī with the wording: "None of you will enter Paradise except the merciful." They said, "O Messenger of Allāh, all of us are merciful." He said, "It is not the mercy of one of you to himself and his family until he is merciful to the people." This Akhshan was mentioned by Ibn Ḥibbān among the trustworthy, and al-Rāfiʿī included in his Amālī from the ḥadīth of Thawbān as marfūʿ: "The highest of you in rank in Paradise is the most merciful to the general public."
