and the researcher examining the routes of this ḥadīth does not doubt that it is also abridged—like the narration of Wakīʿ—from the ḥadīth of Wāʾil which clarifies the description of the Prophet's (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prayer and the standing during which he clasped his hands, which is before the bowing. This has come through two routes: the first is from ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn Wāʾil from ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil and a client of theirs who both narrated to him from his father Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr: that he saw the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) raise his hands when he entered the prayer, saying the takbīr—described by Hammām—at the level of his ears. Then he wrapped himself with his garment. Then he placed his right hand over his left. When he intended to bow, he took his hand out of the garment, then raised it, then said the takbīr and bowed. When he said: "Allāh hears the one who praises Him," he raised his hand. When he prostrated, he prostrated between his palms. This was recorded by Muslim (2/13), Abū ʿAwānah (2/106-107), Aḥmad (4/317-318), and al-Bayhaqī (2/28 and 71). The second is from ʿĀṣim ibn Kulayb from his father from Wāʾil ibn Ḥujr who said: "I said: I will observe the prayer of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) to see how he prays. He said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) stood facing the qiblah and said the takbīr, raising his hands until they were level with his ears. Then he took his left hand with his right. When he intended to bow, he raised them in the same manner. Then he placed his hands on his knees. When he raised his head from bowing, he raised them in the same manner
