I said: This is a weak isnād. Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī ibn Ghurāb was mentioned by Ibn Abī Ḥātim (4/1/28) with another narration from him, and he did not mention any criticism or endorsement, so his status is unknown. His father, ʿAlī ibn Ghurāb, is truthful but a mudallis, and he narrated it with ʿanʿanah. It was criticized for contradiction, as al-Bayhaqī said: Ibn Khuzaymah said: "This report is defective in my view. ʿAbd Allāh ibn Saʿīd al-Ashajj narrated to us, saying: al-Naḍr ibn Ismāʿīl narrated from Abān ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī who said: I saw ʿAdī ibn Thābit facing the imām with his face when he stood to deliver the khuṭbah, so I said to him: I saw you facing the imām with your face? He said: I saw the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ doing it." I said: Ibn Khuzaymah criticized it for being mawqūf on the Companions, and there is a consideration from two aspects: first, that al-Naḍr ibn Ismāʿīl is not better than ʿAlī ibn Ghurāb, as al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "He is not strong." The second is that Ibn al-Mubārak contradicted him, as al-Bayhaqī said afterwards: "And likewise Ibn al-Mubārak narrated it from Abān ibn ʿAbd Allāh from ʿAdī ibn Thābit, except that he said: 'This is how the Companions of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ used to do with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.'" Abū Dāwūd mentioned it in "al-Marāsīl" from Abū Tawbah from Ibn al-Mubārak. Ibn al-Turkumanī critiqued it in "al-Jawhar al-Naqī" saying: "I said: This is musnad, not mursal because all the Companions are just, so their anonymity does not harm." I said: And it is as he said because it is apparent that ʿAdī received it from the Companions.
