I said: someone like him is closer to weakness, indeed to severe weakness, than to truthfulness and memorization. And Allāh knows best. However, al-Mundhirī said following what was previously quoted from him: "It was narrated by Abū al-Shaykh Ibn Ḥayyān in 'Kitāb al-Thawāb' with a weak isnād from Abū Dharr, and its wording is: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'O Abū Dharr, shall I not guide you to the best act of worship, the lightest on the body, the heaviest in the balance, and the easiest on the tongue?' I said: 'Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you.' He said: 'Adhere to prolonged silence and good character, for you will not perform anything like them.'" It was also narrated from the ḥadīth of Abū al-Dardāʾ who said: The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: 'O Abū al-Dardāʾ, shall I not inform you of two things whose burden is light, whose reward is great, and with which you will not meet Allāh with anything like them? Prolonged silence and good character.' I said: I found another supporting evidence for it, mursal. It was recorded by Ibn Abī al-Dunyā (4/39/2) from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Taymī from a companion of theirs from al-Shaʿbī who said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said to Abū Dharr: 'Shall I not guide you to the best deed and the easiest on the body?' He said: 'Yes, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you.' He said: 'Good character and prolonged silence, adhere to them, for you will not meet Allāh with anything like them.' I said: This isnād is mursal and good, were it not for the unnamed companion, and in any case, the ḥadīth of Abū Dharr and Abū al-Dardāʾ is at least ḥasan, if Allāh wills.
