"and modesty is a branch of faith." It was recorded by Muslim (1/46) and Ibn Mājah (57). Ḥammād ibn Salamah corroborated it, saying: Sahl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ informed us with the same wording as Sufyān except that he said: "the best of them" instead of "the highest of them" and "bones" instead of "harm," and he added: "and modesty is a branch of faith." It was recorded by Aḥmad (2/414) and Abū Dāwūd (2, 268) with a sound isnād according to the criteria of Muslim. Ibn ʿAjlān corroborated it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār with the wording: "Faith is sixty or seventy or one of the two numbers..." and the rest is like the ḥadīth of Ḥammād except that he said: "the highest of them." It was recorded by Ibn Abī Shaybah in "al-Īmān" (no. 67 in my verification) and from him by Ibn Mājah (57). Ibn ʿAjlān is considered reliable in ḥadīth except when there is a contradiction, and he contradicted everyone by omitting the word "several," so he is not relied upon. They were also corroborated in a shortened form by Sulaymān ibn Bilāl from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār with the wording: "Faith is several and seventy branches, and modesty is a branch of faith." It was recorded by Muslim, as well as by al-Bukhārī (1/44 - Fatḥ) except that he said: "and sixty." It was recorded by Muslim through two chains, and al-Bukhārī through a third, all from Abū ʿĀmir al-ʿAqdī: Sulaymān ibn Bilāl narrated it to us. It is astonishing that al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar missed this narration of Muslim, as he said in his commentary: "His statement: (and sixty) did not differ in the chains from Abū ʿĀmir, the author’s teacher, in that,
