I said: This chain of narration consists of trustworthy men, the men of Muslim, with a weakness in Muḥammad ibn Kathīr, who is al-ʿAbdī, and the ʿanʿanah [ambiguous transmission] of Abū al-Zubayr, for he is a mudallis [one who conceals defects in the chain]. Muslim also recorded it (6/165) through the route of Maʿqil from Abū al-Zubayr in an abbreviated form with the wording: "May Allāh curse the one who branded it." Then he recorded it through the route of Ibn Jurayj, who said: Abū al-Zubayr informed me that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh say: "The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) forbade striking the face and branding the face." This is a sound chain of narration explicitly stating hearing, and it has been included in "al-Irwāʾ" (2186).

- "As for you, O Jaʿfar, your character resembles my character, and my character resembles your character, and you are from me and my tree. As for you, O ʿAlī, you are my son-in-law, the father of my children, I am from you and you are from me. As for you, O Zayd, you are my ally, from me and to me, and the most beloved of people to me." It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/204), al-Bukhārī in "al-Tārīkh" (1/1/19-20), al-Ḥākim (3/217), and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" number 378 in an abbreviated form from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq from Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Qusaiṭ from Muḥammad ibn Usāmah from his father, who said: "Jaʿfar, ʿAlī, and Zayd ibn Ḥārithah gathered, and Jaʿfar said: I am the most beloved to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). ʿAlī said: I am the most beloved to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). Zayd said: I am the most beloved to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam). They said: Let us go to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) and ask him. Usāmah ibn Zayd said: They came seeking permission, and he said: Go out and see who these are. I said: This is Jaʿfar, ʿAlī, and Zayd. What should I say, my father? He said: Permit them, and they entered. They asked: Who is the most beloved to you? He said: Fāṭimah. They said: We are asking about the men. He said: and mentioned it. al-Ḥākim said:
