"It was narrated by Aḥmad and al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Kabīr", and in it is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAqīl, about whom there is some discussion, but he has been deemed reliable." I said: It is established that his ḥadīth is considered ḥasan if he does not contradict, so critiquing the ḥadīth based on his teacher is more appropriate. As for the statement of al-Ḥāfiẓ in "al-Khiṣāl al-Mukaffirah" (p. 24, Damascus edition) after attributing it to Aḥmad: "Its narrators are reliable, and from another route from ʿUbādah... and likewise al-Ṭabarānī in al-Muʿjam with a similar narration." We have two observations on this: the first is that he indicated the ḥadīth has two routes with Aḥmad, which is an error, as it has only one route with him in this wording, which is this one. The second is that he indicated that the narration of ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān is also reliable, which is not the case because no one other than Ibn Ḥibbān deemed him reliable, and he is lenient in accreditation, as al-Ḥāfiẓ himself explained in the introduction to "al-Lisān." I said: Among its supporting narrations is what was narrated by Baqiyyah ibn al-Walīd, who said: Baḥīr ibn Saʿd narrated to me from Khālid ibn Maʿdān from Abū Baḥriyyah from Muʿādh ibn Jabal that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) was asked about the Night of Decree? He said: "It is in the last ten nights or in the fifth or the third." It was recorded by Aḥmad (5/234). I said: Its chain is good, as all its narrators are reliable, and Baqiyyah explicitly stated the narration. "Seek the Night of Decree on the last night of Ramaḍān." It was recorded by Ibn Naṣr in "Qiyām al-Layl" (p. 106) and Ibn Khuzaymah in "Ṣaḥīḥ" (1/223/1) from ʿAlī ibn ʿĀṣim from al-Jarrīrī from Buraydah from Muʿāwiyah in a marfūʿ form
