(O lamentations of the Arabs...). Then I found a strong supporting evidence for it, attributed to a Companion, recorded by al-Ḥusayn al-Marwazī in "Zawāʾid al-Zuhd" (393/1114). He said: Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah informed us from al-Zuhrī from Maḥmūd ibn al-Rabīʿ from Shaddād ibn Aws that he said it when death approached him: and Ṣāliḥ ibn Kaysān corroborated it from al-Zuhrī with the same. It was recorded by al-Bayhaqī in "Shuʿab al-Īmān" (5/333/6829). This isnād is authentic, and it is more authentic than the marfūʿ narration, as Ibn Abī Ḥātim indicated in "al-ʿIlal" (2/124/1864) from his father. It may be possible to say that it holds the status of marfūʿ, especially since Shaddād said it in the presence of his death. The marfūʿ narration was attributed by al-Ḥāfiẓ in "al-Maṭālib al-ʿĀliyyah" to Abū Yaʿlá from the aforementioned chain there from ʿAmr ʿAbbād ibn Tamīm with it. It is not in the printed "Musnad of Abū Yaʿlá," nor did al-Haythamī attribute it to him in his "Majmaʿ," so it is therefore in the "Musnad of Abū Yaʿlá al-Kabīr." From this chain, al-Bayhaqī recorded it in "al-Shuʿab" (5/332/6824).
