- "He has repented with a repentance that if the people of Madīnah had repented with, it would have been accepted from them." Narrated by Abū Dāwūd (4379) and al-Tirmidhī (1/274) through the chain of Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf al-Firyābī from Isrāʾīl, narrated to us by Samāk ibn Ḥarb from ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil al-Kindī from his father. A woman went out during the time of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) intending to pray, and a man encountered her, covered her, and fulfilled his desire with her. She screamed, and he left. A man passed by her, and she said: That man did such and such to me. They went and captured the man she thought had assaulted her and brought him to her. She said: Yes, it is him. They brought him to the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and when he ordered him to be stoned, the man who had assaulted her stood up and said: O Messenger of Allāh, I am the one who did it. He said to her: Go, for Allāh has forgiven you. He spoke kindly to the man and ordered the man who had assaulted her to be stoned, and he mentioned it. Al-Tirmidhī said: "A good and authentic ḥadīth, and ʿAlqamah ibn Wāʾil heard from his father." I say: Its narrators are all trustworthy, the men of Muslim, and there is some criticism of Samāk that does not harm. He is good in ḥadīth except in his narration from ʿIkrimah, in which there is weakness. However, al-Firyābī was contradicted in some of his narration. Imām Aḥmad (6/379) said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr narrated to us, saying: Isrāʾīl narrated it with the wording: "A woman went out to pray, and a man met her, covered her with his clothes, fulfilled his desire with her, and left. A man came to her, and she said to him: That man did such and such to me. The man went in pursuit of him, and a group from the Anṣār came upon her. She said to them: A man did such and such to me. They went in pursuit of him and brought the man who went in pursuit of the man who assaulted her! They brought him to the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and she said: It is him. When the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) ordered him to be stoned, the one who had assaulted..
