- "Whoever sleeps on a roof without a barrier and falls and dies, the responsibility is absolved from him, and whoever sails the sea during its turbulence and dies, the responsibility is absolved from him." It was recorded by Aḥmad (4/79) through the route of Muḥammad ibn Thābit from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī who said: Some of the companions of Muḥammad told me - and we were on an expedition towards Persia - and he said: The Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. I say: This isnād is weak due to Muḥammad ibn Thābit, who is al-ʿAbdī al-Baṣrī, a truthful but lenient narrator as mentioned in "Taqrīb." ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbbād contradicted him, saying: from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī from Zuhayr ibn ʿAbd Allāh in a marfūʿ form. It was recorded by Abū ʿUbayd in "Gharīb al-Ḥadīth" (p. 47/2): ʿAbbād ibn ʿAbbād narrated it to me. This ʿAbbād is Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Azdī al-Baṣrī, and the ḥāfiẓ said: "Trustworthy, but he might make mistakes." And this isnād seems to be mursal, as Aḥmad said: Azhār narrated to us, Hishām - meaning - al-Dastawāʾī narrated to us from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī who said: "We were in Persia and we had a leader called Zuhayr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, and he said: A man told me that the Prophet of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: and he mentioned it. Then Aḥmad said (5/271): ʿAbd al-Ṣamad narrated to us, Abān narrated to us, Abū ʿImrān narrated to us, Zuhayr ibn ʿAbd Allāh - who was a governor of (Tawj) - and he praised him well - from some of the companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) with it. I say: The narration of al-Dastawāʾī and Abān clarified that the narrations of Muḥammad ibn Thābit and ʿAbbād contain irsāl, and the correct version is that the ḥadīth is from Zuhayr from a man among the companions of the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam)
