it was recorded by al-Bazzār (175) and he said: "Mundal is weak." Similarly, al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (5/171-172) and added: "He was deemed reliable, and the rest of the narrators are trustworthy." I say: in summary, the ḥadīth with these chains and supporting evidence is authentic. And Allāh knows best. Know that the circumcision of women was known among the early generations, contrary to what those without knowledge might think. Here are some reports on that: 1 - From al-Ḥasan who said: "ʿUthmān ibn Abī al-ʿĀṣ was invited to a meal, and it was said: Do you know what this is? This is the circumcision of a girl! He said: This is something we did not see during the time of the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), so he refused to eat." It was recorded by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (3/7/2) through the route of Abū Ḥamzah al-ʿAṭṭār from him. I say: Abū Ḥamzah, whose name is Isḥāq ibn al-Rabīʿ, is considered reliable in ḥadīth as Abū Ḥātim said, and the rest of the narrators are trustworthy. If al-Ḥasan heard it from ʿUthmān, then it is a good chain. It was also narrated by Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq from Ṭalḥah ibn ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Kurayz from al-Ḥasan with it, without mentioning "a girl." It was also recorded by al-Ṭabarānī and Aḥmad (4/217), and its chain is good except for the ʿanʿanah of Ibn Isḥāq, as he was known for tadlīs, and al-Haythamī criticized it for this (4/60). 2 - From Umm al-Muhājir who said: "I and my female captives were taken from the Romans, and ʿUthmān offered us Islam. None of us accepted except me and another, so he said: Circumcise them and purify them, and I used to serve ʿUthmān."
