it would have become permissible. End of quote. This is supported by what was reported by Aḥmad and Ibn Ḥibbān from the ḥadīth of Anas in the story of al-Ḥajjāj ibn ʿAlāṭ, which was also reported by al-Nasāʾī and authenticated by al-Ḥākim, regarding his seeking permission from the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) to say whatever he wished for his benefit in recovering his wealth from the people of Mecca, and the Prophet's (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) permission and informing the people of Mecca that the people of Khaybar had defeated the Muslims, among other well-known matters in this regard.
- "We do not know anything better than a hundred times its like except a believing man." It was reported by Imām Aḥmad (2/109): Hārūn narrated to us, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Usāmah narrated to me from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar that the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said it, and he mentioned it. It was also reported by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr" (p. 82): Ḥasanūn ibn Aḥmad al-Miṣrī narrated to us, Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us, except that he said "a thousand" instead of "a hundred" and omitted Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn ʿUthmān from the isnād. Al-Ṭabarānī commented afterward: "No one narrated it from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār except Usāmah, and Ibn Wahb was unique in narrating it, and it is not reported except through this isnād." I say: The narration of Aḥmad is more authentic in both its isnād and text because I do not know this Shaykh of al-Ṭabarānī, Ḥasanūn. The isnād of Aḥmad is ḥasan, its men are trustworthy, the men of Muslim, except for Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who is the grandson of al-Ḥasan, nicknamed (al-Dībāj), and there is disagreement about him. Al-Ḥāfiẓ said in "al-Taqrīb": "Truthful."
