"There is no human being except that there is wisdom on his head held by an angel. If he humbles himself, it is said to the angel: Raise his wisdom. And if he becomes arrogant, it is said to the angel: Lower his wisdom." This was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī in "al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr" (3/182/1) through the chain of Salām Abū al-Mundhir from ʿAlī ibn Zayd from Yūsuf ibn Mihrān from Ibn ʿAbbās from the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), and he mentioned it. I say: This chain of narration contains trustworthy men except for ʿAlī ibn Zayd, who is Ibn Judʿān, and there is weakness in his memory, although some consider his ḥadīth to be good or acceptable. Al-Ḥākim also narrated another ḥadīth with this chain (2/591) and remained silent about it, and al-Dhahabī said: "Its chain is good!" Al-Haythamī said in "al-Majmaʿ" (8/82) after mentioning it from Ibn ʿAbbās: "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and its chain is good." Al-Mundhirī said in "al-Targhīb" (4/16): "It was narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and al-Bazzār in a similar manner from the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah and their chains are good!" This is what he said, but there is some scrutiny, as some of it is known from what has preceded, and the ḥadīth of Ibn ʿAbbās has a better chain than the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, for both revolve around Ibn Judʿān. However, the first is narrated from him by Salām Abū al-Mundhir, while the latter is narrated by al-Minhāl ibn Khalīfah from him, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Abū Hurayrah, raised to the Prophet. It was narrated by al-ʿUqaylī in "al-Ḍuʿafāʾ" (427), Ibn ʿAdī in "al-Kāmil" (322/2), and al-Ḍiyāʾ in "al-Muntaqā" from his hearings in Marw (p. 142/1), and al-ʿUqaylī said:
