Then he said, may Allāh have mercy on him: [And clarification of its opposite, which is shirk]. Meaning that shirk is the opposite of tawḥīd and sincerity. Shirk revolves around a single concept, which is equating Allāh with others, whether this equating pertains to creation, provision, ownership, and management, such as when a person believes there is a creator, provider, owner, or manager other than Allāh, Glorified and Exalted, or whether it pertains to equating Allāh with others in what is due to Him of names and attributes, such as when a person believes that the attributes of Allāh are like those of the created beings. This too is shirk, from which a believer must rid himself to perfect his tawḥīd and faith from shirk. The most dangerous and greatest form of shirk is shirk in divinity, which is shirk in worship. It means that a person assigns to Allāh a partner in worship, such as fasting for other than Allāh, or praying to other than Allāh, or making vows to other than Allāh, or sacrificing for other than Allāh, or circumambulating a grave in devotion, or calling upon other than Allāh to avert calamities or relieve distress, and so on, which many people do. All of this is shirk, which the sharīʿah came to prohibit and warn against.
