and as for the silent prayer, he approved of their recitation in it. Jābir said: "We used to recite in the ẓuhr and ʿaṣr prayers behind the imam in the first two rakʿahs with the Opening of the Book and a sūrah, and in the last two with the Opening of the Book" (Muslim and Abū ʿAwānah). He only disapproved of causing confusion by it, and that was when he prayed ẓuhr with his companions and said: "Which of you recited 'Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High'?" A man said: "I did [and I intended only good by it]." He said: "I knew that a man was contending with me over it" (al-Bukhārī). In another ḥadīth: "They used to recite behind the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) [and raise their voices with it], and he said: 'You have confused me in the Qurʾān'" (al-Bukhārī in "Afʿāl al-ʿIbād" with an authentic chain). He said: "Indeed, the one praying is conversing with his Lord, so let him consider what he converses with Him about, and do not raise your voices over one another with the Qurʾān."
(ابن ماجة بسند صحيح) وأما في السرية فقد أقرهم على القراءة فيها فقال جابر: (كنا نقرأ في الظهر والعصر خلف الإمام في الركعتين الأوليين بفاتحة الكتاب وسورة وفي الآخريين بفاتحة الكتاب) (مسلم وأبو عوانة). وإنما أنكر التشويش عليه بها وذلك حين (صلى الظهر بأصحابه فقال: (أيكم قرأ سبح اسم ربك الأعلى) فقال رجل: أنا [ولم أرد بها إلا الخير]. فقال: (قد عرفت أن رجلا خالجنيها) (البخاري). وفي حديث آخر: (كانوا يقرؤون خلف النبي ﷺ [فيجهرون به] فقال: (خلطتم علي القرآن) (البخاري في (أفعال العباد) بسند صحيح). وقال: (إن المصلي يناجي ربه فلينظر بما يناجيه به ولا يجهر بعضكم على بعض بالقرآن).
