al-Bayhaqī and al-Ḥākim [reported] that when he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prayed, he would lower his head and direct his gaze towards the ground (al-Bayhaqī and al-Ḥākim authenticated it). and when he entered the Kaʿbah, his gaze did not leave the place of his prostration until he exited it (Abū Dāwūd and Aḥmad with an authentic chain). The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: "There should not be anything in the house that distracts the one praying" (al-Bukhārī and Abū Dāwūd). and he prohibited raising the gaze to the sky, emphasizing the prohibition until he said: (al-Bukhārī and Muslim) "People must stop raising their eyes to the sky during prayer, or their sight will not return to them (and in another narration: or their sight will be snatched away)" (al-Tirmidhī and al-Ḥākim authenticated it). In another ḥadīth: "When you pray, do not turn around, for Allāh sets His face towards the face of His servant in prayer as long as he does not turn away." He also said about turning away: (al-Bukhārī and Abū Dāwūd) "It is a snatching that Satan snatches from the prayer of the servant."
