and he would often prostrate on the ground (Muslim and Abū ʿAwānah). and (his Companions would pray with him in intense heat, and if one of them could not place his forehead on the ground, he would spread his garment and prostrate on it) (Aḥmad, al-Sirāj, and al-Bayhaqī with a sound chain). and he would say: (... the entire earth has been made for me and my community as a place of prostration and a means of purification, so wherever a man from my community is overtaken by the time of prayer, there is his place of prostration and his means of purification [those before me used to revere this, as they would only pray in their churches and synagogues]) (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). and he would sometimes prostrate in mud and water, and this happened to him on the morning of the twenty-first night of Ramadan when the sky rained and the roof of the mosque, made of palm leaves, leaked, so he (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) prostrated in the water and mud. Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī said: (My eyes saw the Messenger of Allāh (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) with traces of water and mud on his forehead and nose) (al-Bukhārī and Muslim). and (he would sometimes pray on a mat) and (sometimes on a woven mat) and (he prayed on it once when it had blackened from long use)
