(al-Bukhārī and Muslim) and as for the night prayer, sometimes he would recite silently and sometimes aloud (Abū Dāwūd and al-Tirmidhī). and (when he recited while at home, his recitation could be heard by those in the room) (al-Nasāʾī and al-Tirmidhī). and (sometimes he would raise his voice even more so that those outside the room could hear him). (meaning outside the room) (Abū Dāwūd and al-Ḥākim, who authenticated it, and al-Dhahabī agreed). And he instructed Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, may Allāh be pleased with them, regarding this when (he went out one night and found Abū Bakr, may Allāh be pleased with him, praying in a low voice, and he passed by ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, may Allāh be pleased with him, who was praying in a loud voice. When they gathered with the Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam), he said: (O Abū Bakr, I passed by you while you were praying in a low voice). He said: I made the one I was supplicating to hear, O Messenger of Allāh. And he said to ʿUmar: (I passed by you while you were praying in a loud voice). He said: O Messenger of Allāh, I wake the drowsy and drive away Satan. The Prophet (ṣallá Allāhu ʿalayhi wa-sallam) said: (O Abū Bakr, raise your voice a little) and said to ʿUmar: (lower your voice a little)
